Does God Assign Gifts and Ministry Roles to Men and Women Equally?

The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts among male and female believers without prejudice, giving each person one or more to help grow and edify the Body of Christ. Scripture identifies these gifts as the gift of wisdom, knowledge, faith (distinct from saving faith), healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, discernment, tongues, interpretation of tongues, serving, teaching God’s Word, encouragement, hospitality, leadership, mercy, and administration (1 Corinthians 12:8-11 and 28-31; Romans 12:6-8; Acts 2:1-4 and 10:44-46).

The Holy Spirit is also responsible for appointing men and women to certain positions within the Church to exercise their gifts. These ministry roles or functions include apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, workers of miracles and healings, hospitality workers, and administrative workers (1 Corinthians 12:28-31; Romans 12:6-8; Ephesians 4:11).

Spiritual gifts and ministry roles or offices are never assigned to individuals based on their worth, ability, value, or importance in God’s Kingdom since those qualities are equal among believers. Instead, they are allocated according to God’s sovereignty, design, and order for accomplishing His divine purposes. As such, men and women can possess the same spiritual gift yet may differ in their delegated roles for exercising it.

Scripture identifies only two gender-specific positions in the Church for men to occupy exclusively: senior pastor and teaching the Bible to men. Every description and qualification in Scripture for leading and pastoring churches depicts men, which demonstrates God's order and design for the leadership of His family, the Church (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9).

Additionally, the responsibility of teaching the Bible to men is reserved for male believers. Women with the gift of teaching God's Word are called to teach other women, teenagers, and children in various capacities but are excluded from teaching or having spiritual authority over men (1 Timothy 2:12-14 and 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9 and 2:3-5).

It should be noted that these two gender-specific roles do not express or imply that women are less-than-equal in the Church or incapable of teaching or leading others spiritually. On the contrary, many women are highly gifted and anointed teachers with significant influence and godly leadership within the Body. Therefore, they should be treated with the same dignity and respect as their male counterparts for serving Jesus faithfully in their assigned roles and capacities.
