How Do I Know If My Thoughts Are of God, Satan, or Me?

One of the best ways to discern whether a thought is of God, Satan, or us is to know the Bible and the principles it teaches. As we read God’s Word regularly, our faith increases and our knowledge of God’s will and ways becomes more evident. Additionally, our understanding of who Jesus is and what He desires for us develops and matures.

The Bible is unlike any other book. It is divinely inspired by God and intentionally given to help us discern our thoughts, among other things. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

Aside from reading and knowing the Bible, we have the Holy Spirit living inside us. He is our Counselor, Teacher, Comforter, and helps us discern our thoughts based upon the truths and principles taught in Scripture.

Over time, you will be amazed at how the Holy Spirit reminds you of certain verses you have previously read that directly relate to various thoughts you encounter. Those verses will serve to confirm or contradict those thoughts, which helps you recognize their source. John 14:26 says, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”

Finally, we must always remember that the Bible is Jesus’ primary way of speaking to us. That is one reason why we cannot neglect reading it consistently. So, if you have not yet become a faithful student of God’s Word, my encouragement to you is to commit to reading one chapter of the New Testament daily. Before you begin, pray, asking Jesus to help you understand what you read. When you finish, thank Him for His Word, and ask Him to help you apply its truths and principles to your daily life.
