How should I respond to false doctrine?

There are a lot of people who believe and promote a lot of things that are unbiblical, which can surface during conversations with them. Knowing what to say or how to respond in those situations may also be overwhelming or confusing. Therefore, I want to provide you with a few steps to try when you are confronted with false doctrine:

  • First, ask the person what they are basing their beliefs on. It will either reveal their religious background or uncover more about their worldview.

  • Next, ask them if they want to know what God says about that topic. If they say “no,” then respect their wishes. But if they say “yes,” share what the Bible says about that subject.

(Note: If your pastor is teaching or promoting false doctrine, meet with him to discuss your concerns, using Scripture to present sound, biblical doctrine on that topic. Ultimately, if he is unwilling to relent, find a new church that faithfully teaches the truth according to God's Word.)

I hope that following these simple steps helps prepare you to address and confront false doctrine when you hear it.
