What Does the Holy Spirit Look Like?

There are a few instances in the Bible where the Holy Spirit manifested in “physical” form. One was during Jesus’ baptism, and the second time was during Pentecost.

When Jesus came up out of the water at His baptism, the Holy Spirit descended on Him in bodily form like a dove (Luke 3:21-22). Additionally, when the Holy Spirit came upon and indwelt the apostles at Pentecost, His presence is described as tongues of fire sitting upon each of them (Acts 2:3-4).

Neither of these descriptions is intended to imply that the Holy Spirit looks like a bird or flaming tongues of fire in reality. They are simply physical representations of His divine, spiritual presence during these supernatural events. As the third member of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit’s true manifestation is spirit because God is spirit (John 4:24).

The closest description we have of what God looks like is found in the person of Jesus Christ. The Bible declares Jesus as God manifested in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16). As such, He is the light of the world (John 8:12), the image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15), the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person (Hebrews 1:3). Therefore, in Jesus, “all the fullness of the deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9).
