When they had carried out all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the cross and laid Him in a tomb. But God raised Him from the dead; and for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His witnesses to the people.
Acts 13:29-31 (NASB)
And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers, that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘You are My Son; today I have begotten You.’ As for the fact that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’
Acts 13:32-34 (NASB)
...but He whom God raised did not undergo decay.

The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
John 2:18-21 (NASB)
For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.

Galatians 1:1 (NASB)
...that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
Ephesians 1:17-21 (NASB)
Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

For Christ also suffered for sins once for all time, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
1 Peter 3:18 (NASB)
...concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness...
Romans 1:3-4a (NASB)
Jesus’ Ascent to Heaven
And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.

Mark 16:19 (NASB)
Jesus’ Physical Body was Raised
When they had carried out all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the cross and laid Him in a tomb. But God raised Him from the dead; and for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His witnesses to the people.
Acts 13:29-31 (NASB)
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” And they remembered His words, and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
Luke 24:1-9 (NASB)
So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
John 20:19-20 (NASB)
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
John 20:24-28 (NASB)
While they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be to you.” But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit. And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. While they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish; and He took it and ate it before them.
Luke 24:36-43 (NASB)
So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have now caught.” Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to question Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.
John 21:9-14 (NASB)
And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.
John 20:6-9 (NASB)
But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’”
John 20:11-17 (NASB)
Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave... The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying... And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and take word to My brethren to leave for Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
Matthew 28:1; 5-6; 8-10 (NASB)
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.
1 Corinthians 15:3-8 (NASB)
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
Luke 24:1-3 (NASB)
Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
1 Corinthians 15:50 (NASB)
Jesus’ Post-Resurrection Appearances
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.
1 Corinthians 15:3-8 (NASB)

Matthew 28:1; 8-10 (NASB)
And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.
Luke 24:13-16 (NASB)
And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them, saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon.” They began to relate their experiences on the road and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread. While they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be to you.” But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit. Acts 13:29-31 (NASB)
The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen. To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.
Acts 1:1-3 (NASB)

Jesus’ Resurrected Body Could Be Touched
And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.

For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
Ephesians 5:30 (NKJV)
Where Jesus Went While In the Tomb
Therefore it says, “When He ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, and He gave gifts to men.” (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)
Ephesians 4:8-10 (NASB)
For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.

He [David], foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.
Acts 2:31 (NKJV)
For David says of Him, ‘I saw the Lord always in my presence; for He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; moreover my flesh also will live in hope; because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.’
Acts 2:25-27 (NASB)
Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

*Suggested Chronological Harmony of Events
Jesus is crucified and buried, and a large stone seals the tomb. (Refer to Matthew 27:50; 57-60)
The stone is sealed and a guard is posted outside. (Refer to Matthew 27:62-66)
Several women head to the tomb with prepared spices. (Refer to Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:1; Luke 24:1-10)
Two angels appear and roll away the stone, there is a great earthquake and the guards faint. (Refer to Luke 24:4; Matthew 28:2-4; Mark 16:4-5)
The women arrive at the tomb and find it empty. Mary Magdalene runs to tell Peter and John that Jesus’ body is gone. (Refer to John 20:1-2; Luke 24:22-24)
The remaining women, still at the tomb, see the angels and are instructed to go tell His disciples that He’s risen from the dead and that they would see Him in Galilee. (Refer to Matthew 28:5-7; Mark 16:2-8; Luke 24:1-7)
The women leave the tomb afraid (but with great joy), intending to report to the disciples what they saw and heard, while the guards leave to report to the chief priests what happened. The guards are bribed to claim that Jesus’ body had been stolen. (Refer to Matthew 28:8; 11-15; Luke 24:8-9)
Mary Magdalene finds Peter and John, and reports to them that Jesus’ body was gone. (Refer to John 20:2; Luke 24:9-11; Luke 24:22-23)
Peter and John run to the tomb. John arrives first and peers inside the tomb. He sees the linen cloths lying there but doesn’t see Jesus’ body. He doesn’t enter. Peter arrives moments later, goes into the tomb, and sees the linen cloths lying there with the handkerchief folded separately by itself. However, he doesn’t see Jesus anywhere. John then enters the tomb as well. (Refer to John 20:3-10; Luke 24:12; Luke 24:24)
Mary Magdalene returns to the tomb crying, and looks inside. She sees two angels sitting there and has a brief conversation with them. (Refer to John 20:11-13)
Mary Magdalene turns around to leave the tomb and sees the resurrected Jesus, Whom she thinks is the gardener, and has a brief conversation with Him. (Refer to John 20:14-15)
Jesus reveals Himself to her by calling her name and she immediately recognizes Him and hugs Him, clinging to Him. (Refer to John 20:16-17a)
Jesus tells her to let Him go, and to go tell His disciples that He will be ascending to heaven. (Refer to John 20:17)
She leaves and reports to the rest of the disciples that she’s actually seen Jesus in person, but they do not believe her. (Refer to Mark 16:9-11; John 20:18)
As the other women are still on their way to tell the eleven and Peter what they’d seen and heard, they are afraid and don’t say anything to anyone. (Refer to Mark 16:8)
Jesus then appears to the women, saying, “Rejoice!” and they fall at His feet, holding onto them and worshipping Him. He tells them to not be afraid, but to go and tell His disciples to go to Galilee where they will see Him. (Refer to Matthew 28:9-10)
They go and report everything to the eleven and all the rest, but their report was not believed. (Refer to Luke 24:9-11)
Jesus appears and talks with two men as they travel to Emmaus. One is Cleopas and the other is not clearly identified; but neither man recognizes Jesus. They have a lengthy conversation with Him, and as they arrive at their destination, Jesus stays and breaks bread with them. Immediately their eyes are opened and they recognize Jesus, but He immediately vanishes from their sight. (Refer to Luke 24:13-31; Mark 16:12)
Sometime either before or after Jesus appeared to Cleopas on the road to Emmaus, He appears to Peter (Simon/Cephas). It is possible that the other individual traveling with Cleopas was actually Peter, since Cleopas reports that Jesus appeared to Peter (Simon), but no other information is given of an appearance to Simon. (Refer to Luke 24:34; 1 Corinthians 15:4-5)
As soon as they return to Jerusalem, Cleopas and the other individual report to the eleven and those who were with them all that had happened; but the disciples do not believe them. (Refer to Mark 16:13; Luke 24:33-35)
Sometime after (or while) Cleopas is reporting this information, Thomas leaves (since he is not present during this first appearing of Jesus to His disciples). Then, Jesus appears in the midst of them (His first appearance to His disciples), and the disciples are afraid and believe that they’re seeing a spirit. Jesus shows them His hands and feet, but they still do not believe. Jesus then asks for food, and He eats. He speaks to them about Himself, and opens their understanding to the Scriptures. The disciples believe, are commissioned to preach the gospel, informed of the coming baptism of the Holy Spirit (their second filling yet to come at Pentecost) and are saved by receiving the initial filling of the Holy Spirit after Jesus breathes on them. (Refer to Matthew 28:16-20; Luke 24:36-49; John 20:19-24)
The disciples report Jesus’ appearing to Thomas, who refuses to believe unless he can see the nail prints in Jesus’ hands/feet, stick his finger into the nail holes and put his hand into Jesus’ side, which had been pierced. (Refer to John 20:25)
Eight days later, when all the disciples are together in a locked room (including Thomas), Jesus suddenly appears and stands in their midst (His second appearance to His disciples). He tells Thomas to put his finger into the nail holes, and his hand into His side; Thomas obeys and as a result believes. Jesus rebukes the disciples for their unbelief of the reports about Him, and again commissions them to go into all the world and preach the gospel, telling them of the miraculous signs that will follow them as they do. (Refer to John 20:26-29; Mark 16:14-18)
Jesus appears again to seven of His disciples by the Sea of Tiberias (“Sea of Galilee”) after their night of unsuccessful fishing (His third appearance to His disciples). During this encounter, Jesus restores Peter. (Refer to John 21:1-24)
Jesus appears to over 500 men at once. (Refer to 1 Corinthians 15:3-6)
Jesus appears to his half-brother James. (Refer to 1 Corinthians 15:7)
Jesus appears to all the apostles, and performs many signs. (Refer to John 20:30-31; John 21:25; 1 Corinthians 15:7)
Jesus’ appearances took place over a period of forty days. (Refer to Acts 1:1-3)
Jesus ascends into heaven in the presence of all His disciples. (Refer to Mark 16:19; Luke 24:50-51; Acts 1:9-11)
