Why Did God Make Us Dependent On Him?

God is the only entity in existence who is self-existent and self-reliant. He does not depend on anyone or anything because He is God and sufficient within Himself.

However, the same cannot be said of others. Everyone and everything else is entirely dependent upon God for their existence and continued existence. In other words, God is necessary for everything else to subsist.

The Bible says that without God, nothing would exist that does exist since He is the One who holds everything together (see Acts 17:24-25 and Colossians 1:17). If God should ever decide to withdraw His spirit and breath from the earth, all flesh would perish together, and man would return to dust (see Job 34:14-15).

Additionally, God is not a created Being, nor can He be duplicated. Therefore, God could not have created humans to function independently of Him because He alone is God, and there is no other God apart from Him. Deuteronomy 4:35 says, “To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord Himself is God; there is none other besides Him.”

Furthermore, the Bible says in Acts 17:28, “in Him we live and move and exist.” Our every function depends on God, and nothing is “of ourselves” except our sin and sinful nature. Therefore, we could not (and would not) exist without God enabling us to live and function.

This truth is one of the reasons why I love 1 Corinthians 4:7. It says, “For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?”

This verse reminds us that everything we have—from our personalities, abilities, and giftings to our forgiveness, redemption, and everything else— results from God’s goodness, enablement, and grace. They are not of our doing and leave no room for pride, boasting, or arrogance but humility and gratitude.

Consequently, we love God because He first loved us (see 1 John 4:19) and showed us His love “in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

I hope this information helps you understand your utter dependence on Jesus in everything and every way.
