Do Any Verses Specifically Say Jesus Was God?

Many people reject Jesus as God because they claim the Bible makes no such direct or explicit statement. However, their assumption is unfounded because Jesus is specified as God in at least three places in Scripture.

The first biblical reference that states Jesus is God is Titus 2:11-14. It reads, “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.” These passages undeniably ascribe Jesus as "our great God and Savior," and cite His first coming and futuristic second coming to Earth as identifying markers and conclusive evidence.

The second Scriptural citation that proclaims Jesus is God is Romans 9:5. It reads, “according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen." This verse clearly identifies Jesus as God, who is eternal and supreme over everything in existence.

The third biblical quotation that specifies Jesus as God is in John chapter one. Verse one states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Verse 14 concludes with, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” Only one Person fits these criteria and the context of the entire chapter, and His name is Jesus Christ.

The next time you encounter someone who claims the Bible never stated Jesus is God, open your Bible to the first of these three Scriptural references. Ask the person to read the verses out loud, then have them answer the following questions (and repeat this process with the other biblical references):

  1. Who is this verse referencing?

  2. What does it say about them?
