The idea of working or having a job during the Millennium can seem regressive and depressing to some after slaving away for decades on the earth. Additionally, the thought of returning to the earth after experiencing the joys of heaven can also seem like a downgrade or anticlimactic. However, nothing could be further from the truth.
The moment we die and go to heaven, everything changes! We will not only be with Jesus, surrounded by His love, perfect righteousness, and unmatched glory, but also perfected in every way. This reality is something our natural minds cannot fathom or comprehend.
Additionally, nothing changes when we return to the earth with Jesus to rule and reign with Him for 1,000 years. We will still be surrounded by His love, glory, and perfection. Plus, the earth will function much differently than now because Satan will be bound in the bottomless pit, unable to deceive or tempt anyone. Therefore, Jesus will rule and reign in absolute righteousness over those who survived the tribulation to repopulate the earth.
Our role will be to assist Him with governing those individuals and their offspring and carrying out His divine will and justice for any disobedience (1 Corinthians 6:2-3; Revelation 19:15). In other words, assisting Jesus (i.e., “working”) will not be a chore or feel like a demotion but an honor and blessing to serve the King of kings and Lord of lords, which is what we were created to do.
I want to share a true and relatable story to compare the difference between working on the earth and “working” for Jesus during the Millennium and beyond:
My daughter has worked full-time for a Fortune 400 company for two years. She also volunteers at her church several times a week in various capacities. Recently, she told me that she sensed Jesus calling her into full-time ministry. She said she hates her job, dreads it every day, and feels like she is wasting her time and purpose. She also expressed that serving at church feels incredibly fulfilling and satisfying because she is making an eternal difference in people's lives and furthering God's Kingdom, which does not feel like work at all.
If we were to multiply my daughter’s feelings of fulfillment and satisfaction while serving at church by a hundred billion, we would not even scratch the surface of what worshipping and serving Jesus will feel like in heaven, on the earth during the Millennium, and in the new heaven and earth. In other words, we will not be bored, disappointed, depressed, or feel like we have gone backward in any way “working” for Jesus. Instead, we will always experience pure joy and perfection in Jesus’ presence from the second we open our eyes in eternity.
I hope this information helps shed some light on our “work” during the Millennium and how blessed we will be through it.
